Is it fair to judge an old [sports, particularly baseball] player using new statistical measures?


Context is everything, as they say, so I would say no. Just as standards of beauty change over time, so do measures of performance. Would you like it if every performance review you ever had was reviewed in the light of your current objectives and targets? Probably not.
